The Gender Reveal
Whew! What a day. I'm so glad today is Friday. The idea of having a gender reveal party is really fun but it's really difficult to pull of successfully.
For the most part the day went as planned, we dropped Asher off at preschool, did some grocery shopping and made a nice breakfast. Got ready to leave and my mom was late. Got there just in time, Ashley was late. All of that we planned for.
What we didn't plan for was the Dr reviewing the ultrasound, saying the same thing 15 times over and referencing, "this little girl" in conversation after having asked if we were finding out the gender. The Dr gave us a lot to think about and the whole thing plus lying on a flat table had my mind swimming. My husband, mom and MIL buzzed about how it must be a girl but I was in denial that after all the planning the Dr slipped and that was how we found out the gender of our baby. We all decided we would just act like we didn't know at the party. I was convinced she used it as a figure of speech and we would continue on as planned.
When we got home our moms went home and we got things ready to go to my moms. We picked up the cake from Ashley who was thrilled to know what we didn't. Ashley warned us the underneath of the cake was exposed and if we looked we would see the color of the cake. Tim and I were tempted to look on the way to the party but decided to wait. Well, I decided to wait. Shortly after we got to my mom's, Tim admitted to me that he peeked. I was furious. The point of the cake was completely ruined and there was no point in us even cutting it. It took me a while to cool off from this but Tim reasoned that no one else knew that we knew and we could still enjoy this moment with our friends and family.
Finally everyone arrived and it was time to cut the cake, in the excitement of everything I completely forgot to Skype my sister in :( I felt like such a bum for that. My other sister got a few photo's for me with her fancy new camera and my friend took a video on my phone because my camcorder is being repaired *ugh.*
Tim made a big deal about cutting the cake and made everyone laugh, Asher insisted he helped cut the cake, the whole cake. It was a fun time even though the pink cake was no surprise. Then someone told everyone how the Dr slipped at the sonogram and we knew all along. So there went the rest of the party. It was nice to be excited and celebrate with the people who are closest to us though. I'm still struggling with how nothing went as planned but I did the same thing with the wedding. My mom sent me a perfect quote this morning that brought me peace about it:
"O God, when I lose hope because my plans have come to nothing... Then help me to remember that, Your love is always greater than my disappointments and Your plans for my life are always better than my dreams."
So all that being said, Tim and I are thrilled to be expecting a DAUGHTER! Our daughter's name is Laila Makenzie Burton and she is already very much loved. Her daddy and friends have already decided on their plans for her first date.. Now to go buy some pink stuff :)
